The Single-Tab Hour

One hour a day where the machine is allowed to do only one thing.

Concentration is rarely broken by a notification. It is broken by the half-second glance at something else, which resets your place far more than it feels like it should.

Switching tasks makes you rebuild your place, and rebuilding does not feel like work while you are doing it. Removing the option to switch tends to work better than resisting it in the moment, because you are not sitting next to the thing you are trying not to open.

  1. 01

Choose the one thing before you start

Written down, specific, decided before the hour begins. Deciding inside the hour is your first switch and it sets the tone.

  2. 02

    Close everything, not most things

One tab, one document, one window. Anything you can see is available, and anything available gets visited eventually.

  3. 03

    Keep a parking sheet

Every stray thought goes on paper and gets no action. That turns an interruption into a two-second note instead of a four-minute detour.

  4. 04

    Stop at the hour

Even mid-flow. Stopping while it is still going well is what makes tomorrow's hour easy to start, and starting is the harder problem.
